Built on a 40-year career in higher education as a lecturer and researcher, I have extensive experience as a coach educator and mentor to elite coaches across all sports. My specific area of expertise is in helping coaches design more effective coaching sessions and programmes based on adopting a Constraint-Led Approach; the contemporary approach to skill learning. I am passionate about coaching and improving the experiences of athletes and players whatever their level.
After teaching PE for four years, I worked in Higher Education and am now an adjunct Professor at QUT, Brisbane, Australia. I have 30 years teaching experience in England, New Zealand and Australia. My specialist areas are skill acquisition, sports coaching and sport psychology. I am a former Associate Professor and have a PhD (in cricket), a Master’s Degree in Sports Coaching; a BA (Hons) in Human Movement and a postgraduate Certificate of Education in PE. I have an international reputation and seen as a world leader in the Constraint-Led Approach to Skill Acquisition, writing four books, numerous book chapters and over 100 research papers and presenting at many national and international conferences over the years. I have coached for over 40 years, including juniors, representative teams and adult teams in football, rugby union and cricket. My main coaching area is cricket and I have coached players from juniors up to test match level. I have extensive experience of delivering coach education courses to a wide range of sports including leading skill acquisition on Level Two and Three courses for South Australia, Tasmania, Cricket Australia, the ICC, AFL Level Three, and mentoring coaches in individual and team sports including elite level coaches in archery (national coach), basketball (NBA coach), golf (PGA tour coach; national coach), cricket (state and national team coaches), rugby union and league (NRL), table tennis, rowing, football. I have recently supported New Zealand Cricket with the re-design of the junior and youth level programme. I offer a range of sports science services for young, ambitious players looking to get the most out of their own individual capabilities, including biomechanical analysis, skill assessments, fitness testing, in-person coaching and performance development programmes. I am also available to provide online mentoring to individual coaches, amateur and professional club coaches as well as coach-parents, as a single session or longer-term mentoring. If you are a player who is looking to move into coaching, I can provide an individually tailored programme of mentorship. If you are a club, school, or national sports organisation looking for help in revising your program, I am available. Please send me a message for more information on the above services, or contact PlayBook to be sent a detailed list of my service types.

Ian is a great coach. He observed Sofia batting for a short time then focussed on a single principle he thought she needed. Sofia came away from a very rewarding session feeling good about her hitting and drill she can practice to strengthen her technique.👍
